St. Petersburg has seen its share of strange headlines. Sand sculpture festivals. Giant ducks. Florida Man doing Florida Man things. But on January 17, 2020, the city briefly added something new to the lore: a real-life, luxury-condo version of a Batman origin story starring Scott Swift.
Yes, that Scott Swift. Taylor Swift’s dad.
The setting could not be more St. Pete if it tried. Vinoy Place Towers, the gleaming waterfront high-rise next to the marina, Beach Drive, and the historic Vinoy Resort. The kind of building where the views are priceless, the neighbors are discreet, and you assume nothing dramatic ever happens.
Until it does…
The Setup: An Unlocked Stairwell and One Bad Decision
According to news and police reports, an intruder, later identified as Terrence Joseph Hoover, accessed the building through an emergency stairwell that’s usually locked (but allegedly wasn’t that day because reality loves plot holes). He then climbed 13 flights of stairs to the top floor of Vinoy Place Towers, a move that would be impressive if it weren’t, you know, breaking into a penthouse.
Hoover entered the $4 million penthouse owned by Scott and Andrea Swift, which property records indicate encompasses the building’s entire top floor, while the owner was away. Security video provided by the homeowners reportedly captured him inside.
But seconds later, the person you really don’t want walking in during your crime spree showed up: Scott Swift returned home and exited the key-card access-only elevator. According to the arrest warrant, Swift saw Hoover immediately, and a struggle ensued.
Hoover ultimately fled the property on foot.
Plot Twist: The Burglar Calls the Cops
Now here’s the part that’s so Florida it should come with a warning label: Hoover later called St. Petersburg police to report the altercation, but refused to return to the property.
Which is basically like calling 911 to say you were committing a crime, and your victim was super rude about it.
Hoover then stayed on the run for nearly a month, until he was arrested more than 100 miles north in Marion County on Feb. 12, according to the arrest report. He was charged with second-degree burglary and held on a bond of more than $50,000.
So… Batman?
Well, let’s review: a rich dad in a penthouse. An intruder climbing 13 flights. A surprise face-to-face showdown. And it all happens in St. Pete, where weird stuff is basically normal.
If Gotham had pastel sunsets and craft breweries, this would basically write itself.
And look, no one’s saying Scott Swift moonlights as The Dad Knight, protector of waterfront condos and sworn enemy of unlocked stairwells, or that Taylor inherited her “…nightmare dressed like a daydream” energy from somewhere extremely literal.
But no one’s not saying it either.
