Like many married couples do when their kids get older and start graduating, my wife Carla and I found ourselves thinking more and more about the next chapter of life. We wanted a place that felt slower, simpler, and full of character, a place we could truly see ourselves building memories in for years to come.
After spending time exploring Florida’s Gulf Coast, we decided to take half of our life savings and invest it into a second home in St. Pete Beach, and honestly, it was one of the best decisions we have ever made.
We fell in love with the old school beach vibe, the people, and the laid back pace of life. The weathered beach buildings, local charm, and relaxed atmosphere in and around St. Pete Beach instantly felt different from everywhere else we visited. It felt real, and that is exactly what drew us in.
There’s just something different about this area compared to a lot of other places in Florida. It doesn’t feel overly commercial or rushed. It still has that laid-back beach town feeling that is getting harder and harder to find these days. You can wake up, grab coffee, drive down Gulf Boulevard, and immediately feel your stress level drop.
We love the restaurants and all the fun things there are to do. We also have a teenage daughter, so we wanted to find a place that had plenty for her to do, but without some of the crazy teen takeover stuff you see in places like Clearwater or parts of Tampa.
She loves doing all the younger crowd activities, like going to TradeWinds for all the fun stuff they have there. She also loves shopping at John’s Pass, hanging out at the St. Pete Pier, and spending time downtown with her friends. There’s always something going on, but it still feels much more relaxed and family-friendly than a lot of other Florida destinations.
Meanwhile, my wife and I love going to Pass-a-Grille and spending time at places like Buoys and Toasted Monkey with the rest of the people in our demographic. We love the beach bars, the sunsets, and just being around people who are there to enjoy life and slow things down a little.
But there are also plenty of things we all enjoy together as a family, like visiting the Dali Museum, checking out local events, or going to Tampa Bay Rays games. The stadium is only about 15 minutes from our condo, which makes it super easy to head downtown for a game.
Everything about the St. Pete area is just top-notch. You get the slow-paced West Coast Florida beach vibes of St. Pete Beach, but then you also have the more energetic downtown St. Pete city vibe nearby. The best part is that it’s not that overwhelming Miami or Orlando type of downtown. Downtown St. Pete feels much more centered around art, culture, restaurants, and local experiences.
Of course, like any city, there are a few rough spots here and there, but for the most part, downtown St. Pete is amazing. The art scene is incredible. There are murals everywhere, including huge ones that make the whole city feel creative and alive.
It honestly feels like two different worlds that perfectly complement each other — downtown St. Pete and St. Pete Beach — and they’re only minutes apart.
We’ve been coming here for about three years now, and we are so happy with our decision. Living up north can be rough sometimes, especially during the winter, so having this little slice of paradise to escape to has been amazing for our family.
If you’re looking for a second home, vacation property, or even a future retirement spot, I would absolutely recommend checking out St. Pete Beach. For us, it has truly become our happy place.
